After selling in Adams County, release liability online

A Porch Note from Colorado Porch — plain-English local details for all 64 Colorado counties.

Handing a buyer the keys and the signed title feels like the whole job. The record that ties your name to that car, though, does not update just because money changed hands.

Two different tasks are at work here. Releasing liability is its own online service for a sold vehicle in Adams County. The handoff itself (signing the title, writing a bill of sale, supplying an emissions certificate if one is required, and dealing with the plates) is a separate set of steps on the county’s selling-a-vehicle page. They connect, but doing one does not automatically do the other.

After a private sale, that distinction can quietly trip you up. You might have signed the title perfectly and kept your plates exactly as Colorado expects, yet the state record still shows you as the owner until the release-of-liability step goes through. If the buyer racks up a toll on E-470 or gets a ticket before they retitle, you want it clear the car left your hands.

So once the buyer pulls away, find the official release-liability route through the county’s online services rather than assuming the title transfer covered it. Keep the bill of sale and the sale details (date, name, odometer) within reach as you do it, so the record you leave behind is clean, consistent, and firmly no longer your problem.
