Adams vehicle transactions follow the county where you live
A Porch Note from Colorado Porch — plain-English local details for all 64 Colorado counties.
A mailing address does not always tell you which county handles your car paperwork. Vehicle registration transactions have to be completed in the county where you actually reside, and around Thornton, Westminster, Aurora, Commerce City, Brighton, and the unincorporated pockets between them, city names and county lines cross in ways that are easy to mix up. A city’s name on an envelope does not always mean the home falls inside the county you would assume.
The rule itself is short. Live in Adams County, and county vehicle transactions go through Adams County Motor Vehicle. Live in another Colorado county, and they go through that county’s motor vehicle office instead. The paperwork follows you, not the dealer or the previous owner.
A recent move adds one more step. Anyone who has moved into Adams County from another Colorado county should know that fees may differ from their old county, so a phone call to Motor Vehicle before renewing by mail will confirm the right amount.
If you are unsure which county your home actually falls in, the Motor Vehicle FAQ is where Adams County spells out the residency rule and how transactions are handled.
