Boulder County open burning starts with the burn portal

A Porch Note from Colorado Porch — plain-English local details for all 64 Colorado counties.

A clear day and a pile of slash in the unincorporated foothills are not enough to put a match to. Open burning is allowed in several forms, but the path you take depends on what you are burning.

A slash pile needs a permit. An agricultural burn needs a registration instead. Other burn types each carry their own rules, so the first job is naming what the fire actually is. All of these routes run through one place: the Open Burn Portal. That single portal is where you apply for a permit, register an agricultural burn, log your intent to burn on the day, cancel if plans change, and report the burn as complete when the embers are out.

The portal covers unincorporated Boulder County, the open land between the towns and cities. If your property sits inside a municipality, the city or town has its own guidance, and that is where to begin instead.

The day-of step matters as much as the permit. Fire restrictions can change between the morning you got approved and the afternoon you light up, so check current restrictions, confirm your burn type, finish the required step, and file your intent through the portal. None of this is paperwork for its own sake. When the intent is logged, dispatch and the neighbors and the responders who watch the ridge already know what the smoke on the hillside means, and no one calls in a wildfire that was always under control.
