The county seat moved twice, ending up in Salida

Where a county keeps its courthouse is a clue to where the power and people were. In Chaffee County that center moved twice.
The county seat started at Granite, in the north, then moved to Buena Vista, a more central spot. In 1928 county voters moved it a second time, to Salida, by then the most populous town, and a new courthouse was finished there a few years later. Each move followed the population and the railroads as they shifted south and west toward the river.
The Buena Vista chapter left a visible mark. The town’s 1880s courthouse and jail still stand near downtown, and today they house the Buena Vista Heritage Museum. So a building designed to run county government now keeps the county’s history instead.
For a new resident, this explains a quiet local fact: the county seat and main county offices are in Salida, not in Buena Vista, even though both are well-known towns. Knowing where the courthouse, clerk, and recorder sit saves a trip when you need to record a deed, pull a permit, or handle other county business.
