Go Underground at the Phoenix Gold Mine
A family-run mine above Idaho Springs walks you into a real gold tunnel and lets you keep whatever you pan out of the creek.

The Argo Mill down in Idaho Springs is a fine thing to look at, but you stay on the outside of the story. A few minutes up Trail Creek Road, the Phoenix Gold Mine lets you walk into it instead. A guide leads you roughly 500 feet back along the old cart rails on one flat level, pointing out two gold veins still sitting in the rock where they formed. It stays around 45 degrees down there year-round, so a light jacket and closed-toed shoes go a long way. Plan on 45 minutes to an hour underground.
The hands-on part comes after. In warm months you can pan the creek out front; when the water freezes or a storm rolls in, the panning moves to indoor tanks fed with Colorado gold and gems that come from that same creek. Either way, the rule is simple: whatever you find, you keep. It is a working family operation that has run tours since 1988, open daily, friendly to all ages.
Creek conditions change with the season, so it is worth confirming what is flowing before you drive up. Hours, rates, and current panning details are on the mine’s official tour page at phoenixgoldmine.com.
