Ruby Hill turns a south Denver hill into a bike playground
A Porch Note from Colorado Porch — plain-English local details for all 64 Colorado counties.
Ruby Hill has stood as a south Denver landmark for generations, a slope that rises above the surrounding streets and hands the neighborhood a long view. Most of that height now does more than hold a vista.
The Ruby Hill Bike Park spreads across 7.5 acres with a slopestyle course, dirt jumps, pump tracks, and a skills course, plus a 1.7-mile natural-surface loop circling Ruby Hill Park that rides well on a mountain bike. The lines run from beginner to advanced, so a kid still learning to stay off the brakes and a rider chasing a clean jump line both find something to work on.
That is a different flavor of city recreation than a paved path or a picnic lawn. Riders can build balance, handling, and nerve without driving out to foothill trails, then roll home for dinner. The terrain rewards practice in a way flat ground never will.
The bike park also fits the hill’s wider character. Ruby Hill sits near the South Platte corridor and has grown into a south-side gathering place for music, winter sledding, biking, and the kind of evening view that pulls people up the slope. The riding features are a big part of why the hill reads as a real outdoor hub rather than leftover open space waiting for a use.
Denver’s Bike Parks page is the place to check current rules, seasonal closures, and any permit details before a first visit.
