Douglas mailed tax payments need postmark breathing room

A Porch Note from Colorado Porch — plain-English local details for all 64 Colorado counties.

Paying your Douglas County property taxes by mail still works fine, but the date that counts is not the day you mailed the check. A mailed payment is treated as received on its USPS postmark date, not the day it lands at the Treasurer’s office.

Here is the catch worth knowing. The post office does not always postmark an envelope on the same day it goes into a mailbox. Drop a check in the slot late in the evening, or over a weekend, and the postmark may read a day or two later than you expect.

On most days that gap means nothing. Near a deadline it can quietly turn an on-time payment into a late one, which is where delinquent interest starts adding up. The envelope you thought was safely in by the cutoff might carry a postmark from after it.

So give the mail some room. Send it several days ahead of the cutoff rather than the night before, include the correct coupon, and make the check payable to the Douglas County Treasurer. A check that arrives well before the deadline never has to win a fight over what day the postmark reads.

When the timing is genuinely tight, mailing is the riskiest choice you can make. The Treasurer’s payment options page covers faster ways to pay that settle the date the moment you submit, instead of leaving it to a box and a postmark stamp you cannot control.
