South of the town of Eagle, up Brush Creek Road, Sylvan Lake State Park sits in a quiet mountain basin. It is one of Colorado’s state parks, run by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and it is an easier introduction to high-country water than a long backcountry hike.
A few practical things to know. The lake is for quiet boating: non-motorized craft like canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, or boats with a small electric trolling motor. Gas motors are not allowed. Fishing for trout is a year-round draw, including ice fishing in winter, though some stretches near the inlet can be closed seasonally to protect spawning fish.
Like all Colorado state parks, entry requires a pass. That can be a daily vehicle pass bought at the park or the annual Keep Colorado Wild Pass, which many residents add to their vehicle registration. There is also camping and a handful of cabins, which fill up and are reserved ahead.
For current hours, fees, boating rules, and any seasonal fishing closures, check the Sylvan Lake State Park pages on the Colorado Parks and Wildlife site before your visit.
