Garfield County tax bills depend on the taxing entities at that address

A tax bill is really a stack of separate bills bundled into one. A single parcel can sit inside a school district, a fire district, a water or sanitation district, a recreation district, a town, and the county all at the same time, with each layer drawing on the same piece of land.

Every one of those taxing entities has its own job and its own rate, written as a mill levy and set by that entity alone. Add up the levies for all the districts serving a parcel and you have the figure that drives its tax bill. Nothing about the bill is set by a single office; it is assembled from many.

Two homes a few hundred feet apart can owe different amounts for exactly this reason — one falls inside a district or town that the other does not. That patchwork runs across Glenwood Springs, Rifle, Carbondale, Silt, New Castle, Parachute, and the unincorporated county between them.

So the parcel tells the truth that the city label in a listing only hints at. The tax bill, the county databases, the GIS tools, and the state property tax map each show which entities are actually tied to a given address, which is the only way to know what will stack onto the levy.
