If you want the long version of how Lake City and Hinsdale County came to be, there is a place in town that holds it.
The Hinsdale County Museum sits in downtown Lake City and is run by the Hinsdale County Historical Society, a local nonprofit. Its home is an 1877 commercial building known as the Finley Block, so the museum is itself a piece of the history it tells. Inside, the exhibits center on the county’s early days, with mining and mineral displays, everyday objects from the early town, and material on the well-known Alfred Packer chapter.
This is useful for a newcomer in a practical way. A good county museum is one of the fastest ways to understand why a place looks and works the way it does, who settled it, and what the land was used for. That context helps when you are trying to read an old mining claim, an odd street name, or the ruins you will see up the surrounding gulches.
The historical society also runs seasonal programs and tours that change through the year, so hours and offerings are not the same in every month.
