For people who want a developed place to camp rather than dispersed ground, the BLM’s Mill Creek Campground is a good base. It sits along the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River southwest of Lake City, around 9,500 feet, and is run by the BLM’s Gunnison Field Office.
The campground works well as a launch point. From here you can reach the Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway, the nearby 14,000-foot peaks, and fishing access along the Lake Fork. It offers a mix of sites you can reserve ahead and sites that are first come, first served, with basic facilities like vault toilets and hand-pump water but no hookups.
The season is short. A high-mountain campground like this is generally open only in summer and closes once cold weather returns, so check dates before you drive out.
This is bear country. The campground provides bear-proof food storage, and using it matters. Keep all food, trash, scented items, and coolers locked away, never in your tent. A bear that learns to find food in a campground can become a danger and may have to be killed, so clean camps protect both people and bears.
