La Veta Pass and the I-25 corridor shape winter driving here
Huerfano County travel runs along Interstate 25 and over La Veta Pass toward the San Luis Valley, and both can change quickly with mountain weather.

Two main travel routes meet in Huerfano County. Interstate 25 runs north–south through Walsenburg, linking Pueblo and the Front Range with Trinidad and New Mexico. Heading west, U.S. 160 climbs over La Veta Pass toward the San Luis Valley.
Both can change fast with mountain weather. La Veta Pass is a high crossing where snow, ice, and wind can show up when the lower country is still clear. Even the interstate through this stretch can see blowing snow and slick spots in a storm. In winter, Colorado’s traction and chain laws can come into play, meaning vehicles may need snow tires, all-wheel drive, or chains to be on certain roads when conditions are bad.
The practical habit is simple: before a winter drive over the pass or up the corridor, check the current road conditions rather than assuming. Conditions and any traction requirements can shift within hours, and what was fine in the morning may not be by afternoon.
For live road conditions, closures, and traction-law status, the Colorado Department of Transportation and its COtrip service are the sources to check before you go.
