Drive I-70 into the foothills west of Denver and you can pull off to watch real bison graze the hillsides. The herd lives at Genesee Park, the first park Denver acquired for its mountain parks system after voters approved a charter amendment in 1912. In 1914 the city brought bison up from Yellowstone National Park and fenced pastures for them on Genesee Mountain. The animals you see today are descended from that stock.
It is free, and you do not have to hike for it. Heading west, take Exit 254 for the Bison Meadow Trailhead, or Exit 253 toward the Chief Hosa Loop, and look across the meadows for the herd, which usually runs to a couple dozen animals. They share the grasslands with the park’s elk.
Here is the honest part: plan for patience, not a guarantee. The bison roam wide pastures on both sides of the interstate, so on any given visit they may be far from the road or out of sight entirely. Mornings and cooler hours tend to be better, and they are wild animals, so watch from the overlook rather than approaching the fence.
