La Plata County building permits are for unincorporated property

A La Plata County building permit reaches only the unincorporated parts of the county, the land that sits outside the cities, towns, and tribal land. On that ground, a permit is required for new structures, additions, remodels, and manufactured or modular homes. Building staff review the plans first, then inspect the work as it moves along, and once the final inspection passes the county can issue a Certificate of Occupancy.

A permit here is never just about the building. Applicants also have to show approval for driveway access, sewage disposal, and domestic water supply before the project goes forward. On a rural Western Slope parcel that often means a private drive off a county road, a septic system instead of a sewer hookup, and a well or another water source instead of city water, each with its own sign-off.

When the parcel is genuinely county land, the La Plata County Building Division is the place to open the conversation, and the sooner the access, septic, and water pieces are lined up, the smoother the permit goes.
