Drive 25 miles north of Durango on US 550, and the road climbs into the San Juan Mountains until a ski mountain opens up on your right. That’s Purgatory, La Plata County’s home resort, and a lot of Durango families measure their winters by it. The numbers help explain the loyalty: Visit Durango lists roughly 1,635 skiable acres and around 105 trails, fed by about 260 inches of snow in an average year. There’s wide-open cruising for new skiers and steep tree runs for people who’ve been coming for decades. Kids ski free here, which keeps it within reach for families chasing weekend powder.
The mountain doesn’t close up when the snow melts. By summer, Purgatory runs an alpine slide, a mountain coaster, and the region’s lift-served bike park, plus scenic chairlift rides that carry you up for the views and a walk around the top before you ride or roll back down. It’s an easy day trip that doesn’t ask for a backcountry plan.
The one thing to plan around is the drive. US 550 over the high passes can close or slow in winter storms, so check conditions before you head up. For current hours, tickets, and what’s running this season, see the resort and Visit Durango directly.
