People often assume the biggest town in a county is its seat of government. In Lincoln County, that is not the case. The larger, busier town is Limon, but the county seat — the place where county government is centered — is Hugo.
The history explains it. Lincoln County was created in 1889, named for President Abraham Lincoln, and Hugo was chosen as the seat. That choice still shapes daily life: the courthouse and the county’s main offices are in Hugo, which is where you go for many official errands tied to property and records.
This matters more than it might seem to a newcomer. The county assessor, treasurer, and clerk and recorder handle the paperwork behind real estate here — deeds, parcel records, property tax, and more — and their offices are in Hugo. The county court sits in Hugo too, though it handles legal matters, not property paperwork. Knowing all of this is centered in Hugo, not Limon, saves a wasted trip.
Office locations and the right department for a given task can change, and some services may be handled by appointment or online. Before you drive over for a specific need, confirm where to go and what to bring with Lincoln County and the Colorado Judicial Branch.
