Roofed decks, carports, and outbuildings can need a Lincoln permit

A Porch Note from Colorado Porch — plain-English local details for all 64 Colorado counties.

A shade cover over the patio, a carport for the truck, a screened porch to keep the plains wind off supper. Out here these read like weekend projects, the kind you knock out with a neighbor and a borrowed nail gun. Lincoln County counts a surprising number of them as work that needs a permit first.

The land use office’s examples run long: decks with attached roofs, patio covers, awnings and carports, room additions, garages and outbuildings, patio enclosures, and screened porches. The county is also careful to flag that the list is not complete, so a project that resembles one of these probably belongs in the same conversation even if it is not named outright.

The thread tying them together is the roof, the structure, and the use of the space. Anything that changes how a building is held up, closed in, or lived in tends to land on the permit side of the line. A loose board swapped for a sound one usually does not. A new roofed structure standing on fresh posts usually does.

None of this turns a simple repair into a project. It just means a quick call to the land use office, before the concrete is poured, the posts are set, or the building kit shows up on a flatbed, usually settles the permit question while the answer is still easy to act on.
