Logan County rain barrels still follow Colorado water rules

A Porch Note from Colorado Porch — plain-English local details for all 64 Colorado counties.

In a dry spell, every barrel of water you can put on the garden feels like a small win. Rain barrels are allowed in Colorado, so that instinct is sound, but the rule around them is narrower than most people expect.

The collection has to fit a specific shape. Certain residential properties may catch precipitation from their rooftops in rain barrels, and the state guidance draws lines around who can collect, where the water may come from, how much total storage is allowed, and what the water may be used for. The catch worth remembering is the last one: this water is meant for outdoor uses on the property where it fell, not for indoor drinking water.

A rain barrel under a downspout is fine when it stays inside those lines. The trouble starts when the idea grows. Stringing together a bigger storage system, capturing runoff from across the whole property, or treating the collected water as a private supply all step past what the barrel rule covers, and they pull you into different water questions entirely.

So before you set up a few barrels, and certainly before any larger collection plan, read DWR’s rainwater guidance and see where your setup falls. Kept small, covered, and pointed at the allowed outdoor use, a rain barrel does exactly what you want it to and nothing the state minds.
