North of Fruita, up a road locals call “18 Road,” the BLM manages a desert trail system that draws mountain bikers from all over. It is open, sandy country at the foot of the Book Cliffs, laced with miles of singletrack.
One thing to get straight: the campground here is a designated, developed campground with a nightly fee, not free “camp anywhere” land. It has marked sites and a stay limit, and the fees help build and maintain the trails. So you cannot just pull off and set up wherever you like at the developed campground; you use the sites as marked. The trails are also shared in places with motorcycles, ATVs, and four-wheel-drive use, so watch for other users.
Why this matters: people new to BLM land often assume all of it is open to free dispersed camping. Rules vary by area, and popular spots like this one are managed more closely. Knowing the difference keeps you from an unpleasant surprise at the trailhead.
