Moffat County building permits can cover more than houses
A Porch Note from Colorado Porch — plain-English local details for all 64 Colorado counties.
Plenty of projects out here in the high sagebrush country around Craig never involve a new house, yet a building permit still comes into play. A permit is required for any structure larger than 200 square feet, a fence higher than 6 feet, a retaining wall greater than 4 feet, and a septic system.
A shop, a hay shed, a tall privacy fence, or a wall cut into a slope can each feel modest next to a home and still land squarely on that list. Size and height are what trigger review, not whether you plan to live inside the thing. A 12-by-20 storage building clears 200 square feet on its own, and a six-foot fence is a common enough choice that the limit catches more people than you might guess.
When you do apply, expect to bring building plans, a plot plan, a completed application, and the distances from your property lines. The plot plan carries the most weight: it has to show existing buildings, the well, the septic, and whatever you intend to build.
If you are not sure whether your project crosses one of those thresholds, a call to the regional building department before the first post goes in will tell you. They can confirm the trigger and walk you through what the application needs.
