Jackson Lake State Park sits on a reservoir in western Morgan County, near Orchard, and it draws boaters, anglers, and campers to a stretch of water in the middle of the plains.
If you plan to put a motorboat or a trailered boat in the water, expect a stop first. Colorado runs a boat inspection program to keep out aquatic nuisance species like zebra and quagga mussels, which can spread from lake to lake on a hull or in standing bilge water. Before launching, trailered and motorized boats are inspected by trained staff, and motorboats and sailboats need an aquatic nuisance species stamp. Inspections happen during set hours, so arriving early in the day avoids surprises.
Hand-launched, human-powered craft like kayaks and canoes are generally exempt from the mandatory inspection, but the “clean, drain, dry” habit still matters for them. Drying your gear between waters is the simplest way to avoid carrying something you cannot see.
None of this is meant to keep you off the water. It is routine, and it protects the reservoir that the park and the valley’s irrigation both depend on.
