People drive a long way for what runs right through Rio Grande County. The stretch of the Rio Grande from the CO 149 bridge at South Fork downstream to the Rio Grande Canal diversion structure, just west of Del Norte, carries Colorado’s Gold Medal designation. That label is not marketing. The state reserves it for water with the habitat to grow real numbers of large trout, and this run is one of the longer ones in Colorado, listed at roughly 17 miles. South Fork’s own count stretches it to nearly 20.
What that means on the ground: brown and rainbow trout, riffles and pools you can wade or float, and a valley-floor view of the San Juans while you cast. It is the kind of river that rewards a slow day.
A couple of things to plan for, not stress over. This Gold Medal section is artificial flies and lures only, so leave the bait at home. And anyone 16 or older needs a Colorado fishing license, which also requires a habitat stamp. Both are easy to buy online or from local agents before you go.
