Routt County plates and driver licenses use different counters

“The DMV” sounds like one place, but in Routt County the vehicle counter and the driver license counter are two different errands run by two different governments.

The county motor vehicle office handles the paperwork that follows a vehicle: titling, registration, lien recordings, revenue collection, and plates. That is where a renewal, a title transfer, or a question about a vehicle record belongs. What the county office does not do is process driver licenses. For those, it sends people to the Steamboat Springs Driver’s License Office, which is a state operation.

The split trips people up because both halves live under the same everyday word. Someone walks in expecting to renew a license and a registration in one trip, only to learn the license side is handled somewhere else entirely. A wasted drive across town in winter is the usual cost of guessing wrong.

The cleaner way to think about it sorts by what is being licensed. Anything about the vehicle itself goes to the county. Anything about you as a driver, a new Colorado license, a renewal, an ID card, runs through the state. Knowing which counter you are headed to before you leave home saves the second trip.
