Drive a few miles east of downtown Steamboat Springs and the road ends at one of the Yampa Valley’s easiest big payoffs: Fish Creek Falls, a waterfall the Forest Service describes as nearly 300 feet tall. You don’t have to earn it with a long hike. A short, wheelchair-accessible overlook trail leads to a clear view of the water dropping through the rocks, which is part of why the falls show up in so many photos across all four seasons, framed by spring runoff, summer green, fall aspen, or winter ice.
If you want to get closer, a dirt trail drops down toward the base, where a historic footbridge crosses Fish Creek. One thing worth checking before you go: that bridge closes annually from April 1 to July 1 during high-water months while the Forest Service works on a longer-term fix, so the route to the very bottom may be off-limits in late spring. The site is a fee area, currently $5 per vehicle per day, with a $30 annual pass option.
For current fees, hours, and the latest on the bridge, check the Forest Service’s Fish Creek Falls Picnic Site page before heading out.
