West of the small community of La Garita, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) cares for a red-rock area called Penitente Canyon. It is a known spot for sport rock climbing, with many bolted routes on the canyon walls. Some south-facing routes can be climbed in cooler months, which is unusual for this high valley.

The area is more than just climbing. A network of singletrack trails is open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. La Garita Creek runs nearby and holds trout. There is a small campground with a mix of tent and RV sites that you can reserve ahead of time. Drinking water is offered only seasonally, so it is wise to bring your own.

The rock here was shaped by ancient volcanic activity tied to the La Garita Caldera, one of the large volcanic features of this region. The canyon’s name is generally traced to Los Hermanos Penitentes, a Catholic lay brotherhood that is part of this region’s Hispano history; for that story, History Colorado is the place to start.

Because this is public land with changing seasonal services, check the current rules, road directions, and campground status before you go. The Bureau of Land Management’s Penitente Canyon pages have the latest details.
