Prewitt Reservoir, near the Washington County line on the northeastern plains, draws anglers, bird watchers, waterfowl hunters, and people who just want open water and sky. It is a good place to know one thing before you go: it is a State Wildlife Area, not a state park.
That difference changes the rules. State Wildlife Areas are managed first for wildlife and for the hunters and anglers whose licenses help pay for them. Because of that, most visitors age 16 and older need a valid hunting or fishing license, or a State Wildlife Area pass, just to be on the property — even if you are only there to walk or watch birds. Activities like boating, swimming, and camping are allowed only as the area posts them, and the rules can be stricter than at a park.
For someone moving to the plains, this is worth understanding early. Some of the best open-space and water access in eastern Colorado is on wildlife areas, and the access comes with a license or pass and a different set of expectations than a park.
Check the current pass rules and posted regulations on the state wildlife agency’s page for Prewitt Reservoir before you visit.
