Trail of the Mourning Dove follows a dry creek through Crow Valley

A Porch Note from Colorado Porch — plain-English local details for all 64 Colorado counties.

The Trail of the Mourning Dove begins at the Steward J. Adams Education Site in Crow Valley, on the shortgrass plains north of Greeley, and packs a full prairie lesson into a short walk. It heads north along Crow Creek, a streambed that is normally dry. The water comes and goes, but the line it cut through the grass stays, and that low channel is the whole story.

Where the ground dips, brush takes hold, and where the brush is, life collects. A brushy lowland like this one rewards a walk timed for early morning or the last hour of light, when birds and other wildlife move along the cover instead of hunkering down against the midday heat. The name is a fair promise: the soft, falling call of a mourning dove is the kind of sound this drainage was made for.

This is the eastern plains in miniature. The county’s open space is not all big landmarks and long horizons. A lot of it lives in the small print of the land, the shallow drainages and creek lines where a thread of brush breaks an ocean of grass and gives everything a reason to gather.

Day-use details and current trail conditions sit on the official Forest Service page, worth a glance before you drive out, since a normally dry creek can read very differently after a wet stretch.
