Ken Mitchell gives Brighton a local lake-and-open-space landmark

Ken Mitchell is one of Brighton’s quieter outdoor anchors. The name turns up three times in the city’s parks and recreation lineup: a lake, a fishing pier boardwalk out over the water, and an open space wrapped around them. Together they add up to a single, walkable place rather than a scattered set of facilities.

That gives Brighton a lake-and-open-space landmark of its own, distinct from Barr Lake State Park a few miles away. Barr Lake is a large state park and wildlife destination. Ken Mitchell belongs to Brighton’s city park system, with the lake, pier, and open space gathered in one local site.

The contrast helps explain Adams County’s north end, where water, farm fields, state-park land, county open space, and city parks sit close together. Ken Mitchell is the city-scale part of that landscape.
