Arapahoe fireworks rules start with what the firework does

A Porch Note from Colorado Porch — plain-English local details for all 64 Colorado counties.

The whole question of what is legal comes down to one simple test: does the firework explode or leave the ground? If it does either, it is illegal throughout Colorado, and that holds true even for items bought legally over the state line. A fountain or a sparkler that stays put on the driveway is a different category from a mortar or a bottle rocket that goes up and bangs. The driving worry behind the rule is dry grass and a hot summer wind, which can turn a single stray spark into a fast-moving grass fire.

That state-level line is only the first of two checks. The second is timing. A county burn ban can layer stricter fire restrictions on top of the law when conditions get dangerous, and a ban can put even the legal ground-based fireworks off-limits for a stretch. So a firework that is fine to use in a wet June can be banned outright by a dry early July, with nothing about the firework itself having changed.

Two things make this easy to get wrong. Package labels are written to sell, not to match Colorado law, so “safe and legal” on the box means very little here. And a neighbor’s memory of last year’s rules tells you nothing about whether a ban is in effect tonight. The county’s fireworks page settles the first question, what kind of item it is, and the burn-ban page settles the second, whether any fireworks are allowed right now. Reading both before you light anything is the difference between a backyard the morning after and a call to the Sheriff’s Office.
