That faster lane covers air conditioners, furnaces, swamp coolers, water heaters, water softeners, and some combined equipment permits. These do not wait in a plan-review queue, so a licensed contractor can often pull the permit and finish the job in the same stretch of days.

Two things still have to line up. The property has to be in the right place: the county building office handles unincorporated Arapahoe County, while a home inside a city like Aurora, Centennial, or Littleton answers to that city’s building department instead. The permit also has to match the actual work. A like-for-like replacement is the easy case. Step up to a tankless water heater, add solar, touch the structure, or fold the swap into a larger remodel, and the job can leave the quick lane for full review.

So the real question is not whether a permit exists, but which jurisdiction the address falls in and whether the work is a straight replacement or something more.
