Gilpin contractors and trades need the right registration

A Porch Note from Colorado Porch — plain-English local details for all 64 Colorado counties.

A remodel in the old mining country around Central City starts with two plain questions: who is registered, and who is pulling each permit. The answers decide whether the work goes smoothly or stalls at the first inspection.

Gilpin County holds contractors to a real credential, not a handshake. A general contractor needs proof of the right ICC exam score, or a valid license from another ICC jurisdiction. Electricians and plumbers carry active state licenses on top of that. The county itself issues electrical and plumbing permits for work in the unincorporated county, and before anyone touches a building, electrical, or plumbing permit, electricians and plumbers must register with Gilpin County first.

For a homeowner, “my contractor handles it” is a reasonable hope but a thin plan. It helps to know who is actually registered, who carries responsibility for each permit, and how inspections get requested through the online portal, so a missed step does not surface as a surprise weeks in.

Clean paperwork will not make a mountain remodel painless. What it does is keep a permit problem from ambushing you later, when inspections, utility releases, or a future sale put every signature back under the light. Gilpin County’s Building page lists the current credential and registration requirements.
