So if the number looks wrong, the place to push back is the assessor, during the county’s protest window, not a phone call about the eventual bill.

A strong protest is built from comparison, not frustration. Set the notice next to the property record and against sales that genuinely match your place, then look hard at size, use, condition, location, and whether the county record simply has a fact wrong. An argument that points to a clear value error carries weight; one that only complains the tax feels high does not.

Timing is the part people lose. Value questions belong with the notice, not with the later payment deadline, so the weeks right after it arrives are when they matter most.
