Get to know Pueblo
Why this place feels like itself
No American city has more Medal of Honor recipients than Pueblo, which prompted President Eisenhower to ask what was in the water there.
Pueblo sits where Fountain Creek runs into the Arkansas River, on the southern edge of Colorado's Front Range. The first permanent settlement here was El Pueblo, an adobe trading post built in 1842 to work the fur trade along the Santa Fe Trail. It was a genuine crossroads: Anglo, French, and African American trappers, Mexican settlers, and Plains, Iroquois, Delaware, and Cherokee people all met and traded at a spot that then marked the border between the United States and Mexico. The post was abandoned after an 1854 attack; the city that grew up around the site incorporated in 1870.
What turned Pueblo from a frontier town into a city was steel. In 1880 William Jackson Palmer's Colorado Coal and Iron Company built ironworks here to roll rails for his railroad, and after an 1892 merger it became Colorado Fuel and Iron, whose only steel mill was in Pueblo. By 1910 the company employed roughly 15,000 people, about a tenth of Colorado's entire workforce, and the mill drew immigrants from across Europe and Mexico into the neighborhoods around it. That heritage is why Pueblo still answers to the nickname Steel City, and a mill on the south side rolls steel to this day.

Two things give modern Pueblo its flavor, one literal. The Pueblo chile, a green chile grown in the Arkansas Valley, anchors a September festival and the city's signature dish, the slopper: a hamburger smothered in green chile. The other is heroism. Pueblo claims four Medal of Honor recipients as hometown sons, and in 1993 a speech in Congress by Rep. Scott McInnis crowned it the Home of Heroes. When President Eisenhower handed Jerry Murphy his medal in 1953, he reportedly asked, 'What is it, something in the water out there in Pueblo? All you guys turn out to be heroes!' A downtown memorial unveiled in 2000 honors all four with larger-than-life bronze statues.
Pueblo's steel and immigrant history still shows in its neighborhoods, food, and civic calendar. The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk follows a restored downtown channel below the brick storefronts and former saloons of Union Avenue. Pueblo chile appears on restaurant menus, at roadside stands, and during the September festival. West of town, Lake Pueblo and the Arkansas River add boating, fishing, and trails to a high-desert landscape of bluffs and broad light.
Worth knowing
Pueblo summers are hot and dry, so shade and reliable home cooling matter. An address can also fall inside the city or in unincorporated Pueblo County, which changes utilities, permits, taxes, and other services. Check the boundary and the offices serving the property.
