The South Platte River is not just farm-country backdrop in Adams County. It runs right through the built-up parts of the county, past Commerce City and Brighton, with riverside trails and fishing access in a number of places along the way.
Two things are useful to know before you fish or walk it. First, down here it is generally warmwater fishing, not the cold trout water people picture in the mountains. Through the metro stretch you are more likely to find species like carp, catfish, sunfish, and bass than trout. That makes for fun, low-key fishing close to home, and it is a different game than a high-country stream.
Second, the South Platte is a long river, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife can set different rules on different stretches. Bag limits, methods, or special sections can change from one reach to the next, so the right move is to look up the current CPW fishing regulations for the exact spot you plan to fish, rather than assume one rule covers the whole river.
A practical note for an urban river: water levels and clarity swing with storms and upstream releases, and banks can be muddy or steep. Watch your footing and skip the water right after heavy rain.
