Adams County has one of the metro area’s big wildlife refuges — Rocky Mountain Arsenal, in Commerce City. What fewer people know is that it has a tiny sister refuge on the other side of the metro: Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge in Arvada.
To be clear about the map, Two Ponds sits in neighboring Jefferson County, not in Adams County itself. But it is a short drive for much of the county’s west side, and it is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as part of the same refuge complex as Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Entry and the trails are free, and the whole refuge is small enough to walk in a calm morning.
What you get is a short network of paths through prairie, woodland, and wetland habitat. It draws birds across the seasons, plus suburban wildlife like deer. Because it is a refuge and not a city park, the rules lean toward protecting wildlife: stay on trails, and check the posted policies before you bring a pet or a bike.
This is a good “small dose of nature” stop when you do not have time to drive to the mountains, and a natural pairing with a longer visit to the Arsenal refuge in Commerce City. It rewards quiet and patience more than a fast loop.
