Elbert County Road and Bridge permits go beyond driveways

A new driveway off a county road is the one permit most people see coming. The Road and Bridge list is much longer than that, and the extra items are the ones that surprise rural landowners.

Permit applications run through residential access and residential grading, an address marker, a private road, commercial access and commercial grading, right-of-way, oversize-overweight, a road use agreement, a roadside memorial, tree relocation, and adopt-a-road. That spread covers a lot of ordinary plains projects, from cutting a new approach to a building site to hauling heavy equipment over a stretch of county gravel.

The common thread is that each one touches the public road system or the right-of-way beside it. Grading near a shoulder, planting or moving a tree close to the road, adding an address marker, or running oversize loads can all affect drainage, sight lines, and the road surface other people depend on. A job can sit entirely on private land and still spill into county territory at the edge.
