Elbert County storage containers need a planning permit check

A shipping container parked out on a few acres looks about as temporary as a parked truck, so it surprises people that Elbert County treats it as a planning question rather than a casual one. Storage container permits sit right alongside the other permit types under Community and Development Services, and like the rest of those permits they fall under the Elbert County Zoning Regulations.

The reason is that a container is really a placed structure, and placing it raises the same questions a small building would. Where exactly it sits on the parcel, how far it stands from property lines and roads, what you are using it for, whether it needs to be screened from view, and whether covenants on the lot allow it can all come into play. There is also the basic question of whether the land is in unincorporated county or inside a town, because that decides whose rules you are following in the first place.

So the right moment to sort this out is before delivery, not after. A forty-foot steel box is heavy enough that hiring a truck to set it down and then move it again is a real expense, and a delivered container that turns out to violate a setback is a slow, annoying thing to undo.
